Artisan sanding a wallet edge during restoration

What a restoration entails

Every repair starts with an honest assessment: we photograph your piece, test the leather's remaining strength, and tell you plainly what can be saved — and what cannot. About one job in ten is beyond help, and we will tell you that before charging a cent.

Then the bench work begins. Seams are unpicked by hand so original panels survive, new thread goes in saddle-stitched (never just glued), edges are re-bevelled and burnished, and the whole piece is deep-conditioned with neatsfoot oil and beeswax.

Re-stitching

Failed seams re-sewn saddle-stitch with braided 0.8 mm thread.

Edge refinishing

Frayed edges bevelled, dyed and burnished back to glass.

Conditioning

Dried-out hides fed with oils and waxes, cracks stabilised.

Hardware

Snaps, rivets, zips and buckles replaced with solid brass.

How a repair moves through the shop

1. Assessment (free). Photos or a drop-off visit; a written quote within two business days.

2. Bench time (1–3 weeks). Most wallets take a week; full briefcase rebuilds take three. You get progress photos halfway.

3. Lifetime cover. Our own restoration work is guaranteed for life — if our stitching fails, we redo it free.

“My grandfather's briefcase came home looking younger than I remembered it. The stitching, the edges, even the smell.”

Repair questions, answered

Re-stitching a wallet starts at $35, edge refinishing at $45, and full briefcase rebuilds run $180–$320. Every quote is fixed before we begin — no surprises at pickup.

Honestly, rarely. Bonded leather peels because its plastic coating fails, and no stitching fixes that. We will tell you straight and suggest a full-grain replacement instead.

Yes — about half our restoration work arrives by post. Pack the piece snugly, include your contact details, and we confirm receipt with photos the day it lands.
